Relax, I haven't heard any rumours of this happening, and I highly doubt the J.P. regime would be looking into this option considering he needs the team to win now to remain employed. However, is the idea that far fetched?
Roy Halladay is a special talent, we all know this. However if this team ever becomes serious about re-building properly, trading Roy is almost a must.
J.P. failed to build the farm system. By trading Doc you get 3 prime prospects. Teams will unload the farm to obtain a talent like Halladay. It sucks, but it may be the only way to go at this point. Roy has been a trooper for this organization, however it may be better for him and the team to part ways.
If you look at what this team needs to accomplish in order to build for the long-term you need to make upgrades at 3B, SS, DH, and possibly one outfield position. I like what I have seen from Adam Lind in LF so he may be a viable option for that position. We also have Snider and Cooper in the minors, but they will be battling it out for 1B. That leaves 3B, SS, and DH as problems in the long term. Trading Halladay could fill those holes.
It will suck to see him go, but it might just have to happen...

I also think that it might be time to rebuild for the future. Again I agree that the best way to do that would be to trade Halladay. He can easily bring in the best package of prospects.
I also think that they should fire J.P. as soon as the season is over. He hasn't even come close (except for one year) to meeting expectations. The jays also have to do a better job of drafting. As well as get back to be one of the leading teams in scouting players from Latin America.

The way I see it the Jays situation right now is very similar to the one the Leafs find themselves in. The team as currently constituted is not a playoff contender (I think that's true even if they were healthy), so to me it makes sense to trade Halladay and begin the process of rebuilding with youth.
The Jays farm system seems to be to be pretty bsre, a terrible situation for a team that does not have the funds to attract big name free agents and also unfortunately has a stigma of being a bad place to play location wise amongst many of those same big name players, which J.P. didn't help in the Adan Dunn incident. Trading their number one asset for prospects would hopefully revitalize the situation in Syracuse and Dunedin and place more of an emphasis on scouting and youth, a must for a team that will never have the financial resources of the Yankees, Tigers or Red Sox.
In short, there is much to be potentially gained from trading Halladay, while virtually nothing is gained from keeping him aside from a close to guaranteed win every 5 starts.

While this is a baseball blog, I was only trying to point out the similarities between the two teams and their options going forward. As you can see, the rest of the post involved the Jays only.
Well if your going to point out similarities between the two teams there's one that you left out......missing the playoffs.
